I was recently asked “what are some of the biggest barriers coaches struggle with?” My immediate response was the two deadly E’s: Envy and Ego. Envy is regarding or longing to have someone else’s advantage or wishing they were like someone else. This of course denounces their true sense of self, worthiness, or unique contribution. On the opposite end of envy, there is ego. The dictionary describes ego or egotism as conceit or self-importance. Both are functions of the mind which can influence how we feel and act. As a professional coach one can easily lose their effectiveness if envy and ego are not in check. How would you know if your ego is in check? Consider the following: you’re not hung up on being proved wrong in situations or easily embarrassed. You’re relaxed on issues of position, power or prestige. You’re able to cope with the unexpected. You find ways to stay resourceful even in crisis. If this describes you, your ego is likely more helpful than harmful; ego, when it is properly recognized and used in balance for good, can bring forth benefits. When the ego’s energy is self-centered, however, it can be traced to deeper insecurities. To coach clients and employees to grow, the coaching language and skillset is centered solely on enhancing the healthy growth of their ego. The contribution a well-trained coach delivers goes right to the ego core of the person being coached. In other words it’s all about the other person not about you. Becoming a certified coach not only has professional benefits and enormous personal growth, but also the opportunity to help others grow. Don’t miss out on being well-trained to grow people and help deliver healthy ego’s all around us.
